Funmigurumi Poochie Dog No. 4: Toby

Best Blog Tips

I got the idea for Toby and had to let it go round and round my mind for a little bit before I could put it together, but here he is! His textured face will be a lot of fun for any Ami lover, young or old.
You might think that it would have been easier to have made Toby using the loop stitch, but that stitch wasn't going to give me the look I wanted, that is the reason why I made Toby this way.
Materials:
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Bright Yellow
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Black
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Soft Brown
Crochet hook size H
Crochet hook size C or B
Pins
Fiberfill
Scissors
Blunt needle
Body (make 2)- With Bright Yellow and H hook, ch 33. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (32 sc). Ch 1, turn. Rows 2 to 31- make 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. If you want to, sew bottom and sides of body as soon as you have finished both sides (I like to finish as I go, it makes the toy come alive quicker), leaving the top open for stuffing. Place both right sides facing and sew the sides and the bottom using the tails you left as you crocheted. Fasten off. Turn both inside out and set aside.
Muzzle-Ch 8. Rnd 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch till 1 chain before end of row, 2 sc in last ch of row. Turn arund and make 1 sc in each
of the loops of foundation chain until you reach the one before the last one, 2 sc in that last loop. Slip st to join round.
Rnd 2- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, slip st to join round.
Rnd 3- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * around and slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 4- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, rep from * around, slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 5- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each ofnest 5 sc, rep from * around. Slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 6- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, rep around, slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 7- 1 sc in each sc around, slip stitch to join rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Moustaches- (Make 2): Ch 8. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Row 2-(Working on back loops only) 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Rows 3 to 5- Rep row 2. Rows 3 to 5-(Working in back loops only): Rep row 2. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Moustache hair: Measure and cut 26 strands of yarn 8 inches long . How to attach strands: Once you have your lengths of yarn cut, proceed to attach the "hair" to the piece as follows: Turn the piece over and working on the loops on the wrong side (the side where the back loop stitches are more prominent), fold 1 strand of yarn in half and using a size C or B crochet hook, inser the hook into the first loop downwards, pull up the strand of yarn by its middle, making a loop in the hook, pull that loop up until you are able to manually pass the ends of the strand through the loop, pull again to close the loop and secure the strand in place. Repeat with evbery loop on that row. Rows 2 to 5- Rep row 1. Once you have finished with all the strands, take the hook and pull the strands to the front, carefully leaving the knots in the back. Sew the piece in place on the side of the muzzle by stitching the edge of the piece all around with the tail you had left. Fasten off.
Eyebrows- With Bright Yellow and H hook, ch 4. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, (3 sc), ch 1, turn.
Row 2- (Working in back loops only) 1 sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. (3 Sc). Rows 3 to 4- rep row 2. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Cut 18 strands of yarn 4 inches long (9 per brow). Fold strands in half and hook them to the side of eyebrow strip where the back loop work is prominent.
Pull to the front just as you did for Mustache. Pin in place above eyes. Take tail and thread a blunt needle, sew in place as seen in photos.
Note: You can add more if you want to but by now I figure you must be tired of cutting, hooking and pulling.
Nose- With Warm Brown and H hook, ch 7. Ro1-1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch acrossd. Ch 1, turn. Rows 2 to 4- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Pin the nose to the muzzle in between the moustache hairs and thread a blunt needle with the tail you left. Sew all around, fasten off. Thread blunt needle with Black and embroider mouth below nose as seen in photos. Fasten off.
Pin muzzle to center of Toby's face, leaving a spot open. Lightly fill with Fiberfill. Using tail, sew all around. Fasten off.
Eyes-(Make 2): With Black and H hook, ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Slip stitch to join round. Fasten off. Join Soft Brown. Rnd 2- 2 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc, rep around. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Pin in place and sew as seen in photos.
Tail- Ch 13. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (12 sc). Rows 2 to 10- Working in back loops only, make 1 sc in each sc across. (12 sc).
Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Measure and cut 58 strands of Bright Yellow yarn 8 inches long. Turn the piece around towards the side where the loops are prominent and folding each strand in half and using a size C or size B crochet hook, attach the folded strand to each loop as explained for the moustache. Pull the loops through to the other side, leaving only the knots on the wrong side. Using the tail you left, thread a blunt needle and sew Toby's tail into a tube, close up the bottom of the tube and bring thread up and attach the tail to Toby's back on the 13th row, (counting from the bottom) well centered. Fasten off.
Ears, Back Piece (Make 2)- With Bright Yellow, ch 7. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn (6 sc). Row 2- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc till last sc, 2 sc in last sc, (8 sc). Ch 1, turn. Row 3- 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to end of row, (10 sc). Ch 1, turn.
Row 4- 1 sc in each sc across. (10 sc). Ch 1, turn. Row 5- 1 sc in each of first 4 sc, 2 sc in nest sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to end of row, (12 sc). Ch 1, turn. Arms- With Bright Yellow, and H hook, Ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st to close round. Rnd 2- Make 2 sc in each sc around.
Rnd 3- Make 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. Rnd 4- Make 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around.

Funmigurumi Poochie Dog No. 3: Missy

Best Blog Tips

Here's Missy, Spots' little sister. She's delicate in her movements, even elegant, but a regular tomboy as well. She's a fast runner, a limber fence climber (sigh!), a ferocious guard dog, and a finicky eater, but oh, such a loving and beautiful dog! No toy will do her justice, so I seek to capture only her funny side, because she's a regular clown as well. She's just a big-hearted girly dog who is not above being the ring-leader in mischief. She has drop-dead gorgeous eyes and loves to carry around her Milk Bone like a cigar.
(The real names of our dogs are Cody and Daisy, but I am only trying to cartoon their personalities in these toys, that is why I have also changed their names.) They have also big, soulful, yellow eyes and spotted bodies. They also have long hair, so I decided to add shells to Missy's boddy to represent her long fur.
Hope you enjoy this one also!

Funmigurumi Mixed-Media Owlettes: Winkie and Hooter

Best Blog Tips

Mixed media is not only fun but it sometimes saves you time, if you are in a hurry to make a gift. If you have a special toddler or 6 to 12-month-old baby that you want to surprise with an easy to make, cute toy for the crib, playpen or just for naptime fun and comfort, this is an ideal one to make. It is a combo toy and it works out really fast. You will be using a paper pattern to cut out the body from fleece or from sweatshirt fabric and crochet to make out the rest.
Materials:

1/2 yard of fleece or sweatshirt fabric, any kind you like (I used a stretchy striped one, it behaved like knit fabric)

1 cat toy with a bell per owlette

Scissors

Sharp sewing needle

Blunt needle

Size H crochet hook and size F crochet hook

Embroidery floss (Black for Winkie, Pale Yellow for Hooter, Red to emphasize belly of both owlettes)

Scraps of Red Heart worsted weight yarn in the following colors:

Baby Yellow, Pumpkin, Pretty N Pink, Spring Green, and Cherry Red

Quilting sewing thread or upholstery thread (strong) matching the fabric of your choice, and red sewing thread

Fiberfill

(Optional) sewing machine

Paper

Pen or pencil

Compas or bowl of the size you want your owlette

Pins
With compass or bowl, make a circle as large as possible for a compass or as large as the bowl you have selected on the sheet of paper. With the pen or pencil, draw two triangles on both ends of the top of the circle (those are the horns, since these are baby horned owls).Refine the triangles to your satisfaction. Cut your paper pattern. Take the fabric (iron it if it is wrinkled), and pin the paper pattern to it,cut two (Front and Back). Set aside. Eyes- (Make 2 per owlette) With Black, ch 2. Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Rnd 2- Make 2 sc in each sc around. Fasten off Black. Join Baby Yellow. Make 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat around. Fasten off. Beak (Make 1 per owlette)- With Pumpkin and F hook, ch 3. Row 1- 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk, ch 2, turn. Row 2- 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2, turn. Row 3- Rep row 2.
Belly- For Hooter, proceed as follows: With Pretty N Pink, ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Rnd 2- Make 2 sc in each sc acround. Rnd 3- Make 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep around. Rnd 4- Make 2 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep around.Rnd 5- Make 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. Rnd 6- Make 1 sc in each of first 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. Rnd 7- Make 1 sc in each sc around. Fasten off Pretty N Pink. Join Baby Yellow. Rnd 8- 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep around. Rnds 9 to 10- 1 sc in each sc around. Rnd 11- Make 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. Fasten off.For Winkie, proceed as follows: With Cherry Red, ch 2. Rnds 1 to 4- Rep first 4 rnds as for Hooter's belly. Fasten off. Join Spring Green.Rnds 5 to 7- Rep Rnds 5 to 7 as for Hooter's Belly. Fasten off. Join Pretty N Pink. Rnds 8 to 9- Rep Rnds 8 and 9 as for Hooter. Sew beak to belly with the same yarn with which you made beak. Fasten off.
Putting your owlettes together- With both right sides facing, pin your owlette's body so that the fabric will not twist on you as you sew it.With either sewing machine or by hand using quilting thread and needle and running stitch in small and close stitches, sew both front and back of body together, leaving an opening at the bottom for stuffing. Turn inside out. Sew eyes in place as in photos using embroidery thread. Stuff belly and sew it in place usingred sewing thread and very small stitches. Fasten off. Thread the sewing needle with Red embroidery thread and go all around the belly with a nice and even buttonhole stitch to adhere it more firmly to the body of the toy. Stuff your toy, slip the cat bell inside. Finish stuffing. Sew bottom closed.
Note- You can make these owlettes as simple soft toys out of terry and crochet too. But I thought it would be more fun for the baby tohave them rattle as well.
