Funmigurumi Mookie Tookies: Sneakers the Dog

When we lived in Washington State (a state I love), we had a friend and neighbor who had a dog who liked to chew on shoes. One afternoon, after taking a long walk with friends, we came home with muddy shoes (mine were sneakers) and left them on the front door until they were dry, and went into the house. I came back later to pick up my sneakers only to find them all chewed up. The kids had accustomed the dog to be quiet by allowing it to chew on old shoes, so he took my sneakers to amuse himself. The whole thing wasn’t funny then, but it is now, so I have named this dog Sneakers. Here is the little rascal inspired by this now hilarious episode in my life. Enjoy!

Body-

With Spring Green and H hook, ch 2.

Rnd 1- 6 sc in second ch from hook. Sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)

Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4- 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5- 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (30 sc) Fasten off Blue, weave in tail.

Rnd 6- Join Bright Yellow. Work 1 sc in each sc around. (30 sc)

Now, we will stop working in rounds, we will work in rows, to give our little guy the square top that is characteristic of our Mookie Tookies. We will do a little math, but don’t be afraid, it’s quite easy!

We have now 64 stitches around, and we want to work in two sections of 16 stitches each in Front (to give him a bi-colored top), and we will do the same at Back.

16 x 4=64. So it has to be exactly 16 stitches. To make it easier, we will work in sections which we will later on, sew together.

Front-

Section #1-

Row 32- Still using Bright Yellow, work 16 sc. Ch 1, turn,  leaving the other stitches un-worked. (16 sc)

Row 33- 1 sc in each sc across. (16 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Rows 34 to 35- 1 sc in each sc across. (16 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 36- 1 sc in each sc across. (16 sc) Fasten off Bright Yellow, leaving long tail to sew with.

Measure Back, centering tail as seen in photos, pin in place. Thread blunt needle with leftover tail and sew. Fasten off and secure tail inside Body.

Muzzle-

With Carrot and H hook, ch 7.

Rnd 1- 1 sc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. Working now in foundation loops, make 1 sc in each foundation loop. (12 sc)

Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (24 sc)

Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (30 sc)

Rnd 4- 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (36)

Rnd 5- 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (42 sc)

Rnd 6- 1 sc in each sc around. (42 sc)

Rnds 7 to 8- 1 sc in each sc around. (42 sc) Fasten off Carrot, leaving long tail to sew with.

Nose-

With Black and H hook, ch 7.

Row 1- 1 sc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 3- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off Black, leaving long tail to sew with (long enough to also embroider Mouth.)

Pin Nose in place, thread blunt needle with leftover tail and sew in center of Muzzle as seen in photos. Embroider Mouth. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Face Marking-

Fold Muzzle in half across the middle (horizontally), count 9 sc from the edge toward the top of the semi-circle, join Carrot yarn to the next sc.

Row 1- With Carrot and H hook, Ch 1. 1 sc in same sc where you joined yarn and in each of next 5 sc. (6 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 2- 1 sc in each sc across. (6 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Rnds 3 to 7- 1 sc in each sc across. (6 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 8- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew the Marking with.

Face Marking Note 1- When sewing this piece to the Head, use only Front Loops, leaving Back Loops to close Head with. The rest of the Head sew as usual.

Face Marking Note 2- Make a line of discreet little sts at the bottom of the Face Marking, where it joins the Muzzle, so that Marking will lay flat on the Face while the Muzzle rises up with the stuffing. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Stuff Muzzle and pin in place as seen in photos. Sew. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Eyes (Make 2)-

With Black and H hook, ch 2.

Rnd- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. Fasten off, leaving long enough tail to sew and to embroider eyebrows with. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Ears-

Ear #1-

With H hook and Bright Yellow, ch 2.

Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)
