Spunky is the latest hippo baby around here. He was born today. One of my favorite things about him are his happy colors and the fact that he is a cute scrap-buster. Hope you enjoy making one!

Materials-
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Pumpkin (1 skein)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Royal (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Spring Green (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Bright Yellow (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Aruba Sea (1/2 skein)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Pale Yellow (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Pretty ‘N Pink (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Black (scraps)
Crochet hook sizes H, F and J
Fiberfill
Blunt needle
Measuring tape

Size- Approx. 9 ½’ x 7 ½”

Body
Side #1 (Make 2)-
With Royal, ch 16.
Row 1- 1 sc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 to 7- Rep row 2. (15 sc)
Row 8- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off Royal, leaving long tail to sew with. (15 sc)
Row 9- Join Spring Green, work 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 10 to 11- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 12- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Fasten off Spring Green, leaving long tail to sew with.
Row 13- Join Bright Yellow. Work 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 14 to 16- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 17- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off Bright Yellow, leaving long tail to sew with.
Row 18- Join Aruba Sea. Make 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 19 to 30- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 31- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off Aruba Sea, leaving long tail to sew with.

Side #2 (Make 2)-
With Pumpkin, ch 16.
Row 1- 1 sc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 to 30- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 31- 1 sc in each sc across. (15 sc) Fasten off Pumpkin, leaving a long tail to sew with.

Thread a blunt needle with leftover tails and sew one piece of Side #1 to 1 piece of side #2 for the Front. Fasten off, weave in tail. Repeat the same procedure for the Back, trying that the colors will fall on the same side at the Back and at the Front. Sew sides together. Sew bottom closed. Fasten off, weave in tails. Do not close top.

Muzzle- With hook H and Pale Yellow, ch 11.
Rnd 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and all across till your reach the last ch, make 3 sc in that chain, working across foundation loops, make 1 sc in each loop across. Do not turn, work, sl st to end rnd. (21 sts)
Rnd 2- Ch 1, 1 sc in same spot, 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in spot where first ch 1 was made at the beginning, sl st to end rnd. (25 sts)
Rnd 3- Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 1 sc in last sc, sl st to end rnd bypassing ch 1 at the start of round. (28 sts)
Rnd 4- Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 1 sc in  next sc, 2 sc in last sc. Sl st to join rnd. (31 sts)
Rnd 5- Ch 1, 1 sc in same spot, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc till end of rnd, sl st to stitch made after ch 1, to join rnd. (34 sts)
Rnd 6- Ch 1, 1 sc in same spot, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc till end of rnd, sl st to join to first sc of rnd (skipping beginning ch 1). (37)
Rnd 7- ch 1, 1 sc in each sc around, 1 sc in front of ch 1, sl st to first sc of rnd, ignoring ch1. (37 sts)
Rnd 8- Rep rnd 7. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. (37 sts)

Mouth-
Thread blunt needle with Black and embroider Mouth as seen in photos. Fasten off and secure inside Muzzle.

Nostrils (Make 2)-
With Pretty ‘N Pink and H hook ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 8 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.

Pin Nostrils on both sides of Muzzle as seen in photos and using tails, sew in place. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Thread blunt needle with Black and sew side to side two thick lines in the middle of each Nostril to simulate buttons. Fasten off.
Stuff Muzzle with Fiberfill and pin in place, making sure you have centered it well. Thread blunt needle with leftover tail and sew in place. Fasten off and secure inside Body.

Eyes (Make 2)-
With H hook and Black, ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.

Pin Eyes above Muzzle as seen in photos, thread blunt needle with tail and sew each eye in place. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Eyebrows-
Embroider eyebrows as seen in pictures. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Bangs-
With F hook and Bright Yellow, and using only the FRONT LOOP of each sc so that you can use the back loop to sew the head closed, ch 14, sl st in same sc, *sl st in front loop of next sc, ch 14, sl st in same sc, rep from * until you have completed 5 long loops. (DO NOT COVER EYEBROWS!) Fasten off, secure tails inside head.

Arms-
Arm #1-
With Spring Green and H hook, ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)
Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4- 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc) Fasten off Spring Green, weave in tail.
Rnd 5- Join Bright Yellow. Work 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc)
Rnd 6- 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc)
Rnd 7- 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc) Fasten off Bright Yellow, weave in tail.
Rnd 8- Join Aruba Sea. Make 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc)
Rnds 9 to 11- 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc) Fasten off Aruba Sea, leaving long tail to sew with.

Arm #2-
With Pumpkin and H hook, ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)
Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (18 sc)
Rnds 4 to 11- 1 sc in each sc around. (18 sc) Fasten off Pumpkin, leaving long tail to sew with.

Legs-
Leg #1-
With Royal and size H hook, ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)
Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (18 sc)
Rnds 4 to 5- 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (24 sc) Fasten off Royal, weave in tail.
Rnd 6 Join Spring Green. Work 1 sc in each sc around. (24 sc)
Rnds 7 to 8- 1 sc in each sc around. (24 sc) Fasten off Spring Green, weave in tail.
Rnd 9- Join Bright Yellow. Work 1 sc in each sc around. (24 sc)
Rnds 10 to 13- each sc around. (24 sc) Fasten off Bright Yellow, leaving a long tail to sew with.

Leg #2-
With Pumpkin and H hook, ch 2.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to join rnd. (6 sc)
Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3- 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4- 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. (24 sc)
Rnds 5 to 13- 1 sc in each sc around. (24 sc) Fasten off Pumpkin, leaving long tail to sew with.

Stuff legs and sew in place as seen in photos. Fasten off, weave in ends securely.
Stuff arms and sew in place as you see in pictures. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Tail-
With 1 strand each of Bright Yellow, Spring Green, Pumpkin and Aruba Sea and J hook, ch 24, leaving a little bit of yarn at the beginning of the chain. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Tie a little knot at the end of the chain and trim, leaving the little bit of yarn to act as a little tassel at the end. Measure back, center tail at Back and sew firmly (remember that kids like to pull tails!) Fasten off secure inside Body.

Ears-
Ear #1 (Make 2)-
With Pumpkin and hook size H, ch 3.
Row 1- Make 3 dc in third ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. (4 dc)
Row 2- (Change to hook size F) work 2 sc in each dc across. (8 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3- 1 sc in each sc across. (8 sc) Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with in one of the two pieces. Thread blunt needle and sew both pieces together, leaving bottom open to stick to head.

Ear #2 (Make 2)-
With Aruba Sea and hook size H, ch 3.
Row 1- Make 3 dc in third ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. (4 dc)
Row 2- (Change to hook size F) work 2 sc in each dc across. (8 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3- 1 sc in each sc across. (8 sc) Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with in one of the two pieces. Thread blunt needle and sew both pieces together, leaving bottom open to stick to head.

Stuff Spunky’s body well. Sew top. Fasten off, weave in tail. Insert open portion of each ear in place and sew as seen in photos. Fasten off, weave in tail.
