Shaping muzzle: (NOTE- Don't panic, if after shaping muzzle according to instructions your dog looks like a pig, that is exactly what it looks like wihtout the face fur.) Holding muzzle in your hand and push bottom part of it "in" (mouth will be a little bit "sunken"), grab with your fingers the bottom of the "cheek" that will form, turn the muzzle to the wrong side and threading a blunt needle with Bright Yellow,
secure the crease formed by stitching it in place. Repeat on the opposite side. As you stitch around to secure in place, fill a little more to create a "cheeky" pouch, then, making small stitches in a diagonal direction going from the outer edge of the muzzle inwards towards the nose, secure in place that stuffing so it won't move.
Make the stitches very small so they will not be noticeale (it is true that we will be covering this with the face hair, but it is good to get used to making the shaping as invisible as possible). Repeat on opposite side.
Measure front of Nibble's "face" (Light Blue portion of body) center muzzle and pin it, leaving one side open to stuff, even as you secure it. Finish stitching all around the muzzle, stiffing lightly and shaping as you goo. Fasten off.
Muzzle Hair- Measure and cut 80 8"-strands of Bright Yellow for each side of the muzzle (160 total for the muzzle) and 27 8"-strands for the "beard".
Using a C hook attach hair as follows: Fold yarn in half, making sure edges match, while holding the yarn in one hand, insert the crochet hook in the specific stitch you will be working, pull folded yarn through, forming a loop, then pass the ends of the strand of yarn through that loop and pull to secure it.
You can attach the hair randomly all over the muzzle or you can do it by rows. I did approximately 7 rows as evenly as I could on both sides (not all had the same amount of "hair") going from the very edge of the nose to the edge of the muzzle.
For the beard, I attached 7 strands of hair" in a straight line right underneath the mouth, then 10 strands in the two following rows.
Nose- With Cafe, Ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st to join rnd. Rnd 2- 2 sc in eacch sc around. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Pin to center of muzzle and sew in place. Thread needle with Cafe and right underneath nose and in between creased muzzle,
stitch mouth as seen in photos.
Eyes (make 2)- With Black, ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 4 sc in 2nd ch from hk, sl st to join rnd. Fasten off. Rnd 2- Join Cafe, make 2 sc in each sc around, fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Pin eyes in place as seen in photos, thread blunt needle with tail, sew in place. Fasten off.
Forehead Hair that Forms Pony Tail- With Light Blue measure and cut 5 8"-strands of yarn and folding them in half attach them in a straight line right in between the eyes.
Measure and cut 30 8"-strands of Light Blue and attach in two straight rows of 15 strands each right above the eyes, going to the upper edge of one eye to the other.
Ears- (Make 2)- With Bright Yellow, ch 13. Row 1- 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2- 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Row 3- 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, sc2tog over next 2 sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc2tog over next 2 sc, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4- 1 sc in each sc across. Row 5- Sc2tog over first 2 sc, 1 sc in each sc tillyou reach the last 2 sc, sc2tog over last 2 sc. Row 6- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off Bright Yellow.
Row 7- Join Light Blue. Make 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off. With the wrong side facing, fold the two ends of the Bright Yellow section of the ear so that the two sides meet, sew them together. Turn ear inside out. Repeat with the other one. Cut 10 more 8"-long strands of Bright Yellow yarn per ear and attach to sides and to the back of each ear. Trim all "hair" to the same length.
Stuff body and sew top of it. Fasten off. Sew ears in place.
For Ear Fur cut 30 8"-long strands of Bright Yellow. Attach as explained before to top 3 layers of each ear in a straight line, right underneath the Light Blue section of each ear.
Fur for tail- Cut 30 8"-long strands of Light blue and just attach them to the tail (I only made several rows, just to let the hair hang down and give the tail a fluffy appearance.) Trim ends to the same length.
Pick up the Light Blue strands of "hair" into a pony tail, secure with a piece of ribbon and stitch so that ribbon won't become undone.
That's it!

Funmigurumi Poochie Dog No. 7: Muffin

Best Blog Tips

Hope you guys don't mind if I share with you some challenging projects to "expand" your toy-making skills! Muffin, like Baxter, is suggested for Intermediate crocheters, although a beginner who carefuly follows instructions can tackle him any day and come up with a satisfactory result. As all my patterns, he is pretty simple overall, it is when it comes to his "face" that the challenging part begins, but it can be fun and you can wind up with the cutest dog you've ever tried, so don't pass by on the chance to make him!
Muffin is just a lovable doggie. His color mix shouts friendly, playful and happy, without being too high-energy. The expression of his face is that of a fun-loving and gentle dog.

Red Heart worsted weight yarn Coffee (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Black (scraps)
Crochet size H hook

Scissors
Blunt needle

As I said before, the only challenging portion of this pattern is reproducing the skin at both sides of the muzzle which forms folds that contribute to the expression of the face, but if you follow the instructions carefully, I have no doubts that you can master these "wrinkles".

Fasten off Aran, weave in tail.
Sides of Muzzle (Jowls)- Fold the muzzle in half (you will be working only from the middle of the bottom up to one side, and then back to bottom until you finish one jowl, you will fasten off, and then do the same on the opposite side)so that you will find the very middle of the bottom, and, inserting the hook in the middle of the lower part of it, join Aran again. Row 1- Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sl st in next sc. Turn.
Row 2- Sl st, make 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, sl st in last st, turn.

Wrinkles- This is a bit of needle sculpting but don't be afraid of it. Thread a blunt needle with Aran. "Pinch" the upper part of the jowl on one side with your fingers, just as it leaves muzzle. Secure the "wrinkle" in place by sewing at the back. Fasten off. "Pinch" the outer edge of the same jowl and repeat the procedure with a longer wrinkle. With your fingers again, "pinch" in the middle lower part, between the two previous wrinkles, make a small wrinkle there, sew in place. Fasten off and repeat on the other side. When you have completed the "wrinkles on both sides, thread a needle with Aran and pass it in and out of the stitches along the lower edge of the jowl and pull gently to gather it, secure and fasten off. Repeat on the opposite side. Set aside until you make nose.
